The New South was the era following shortly after the Civil struggle in the south. Three prominent figures from the time period were total heat W. Grady, Booker T. Washington, and W.E.B. DuBois. They only had varied views on the image and lay out of the African-American, some being to a greater extent radical than others.
Henry W. Grady was an strategic editor of the Atlanta Constitution during the New South Era. His views on the role of African-Americans during this time period was definitely a different one from a modern perspective. In reading his speeches he blatantly states that African-Americans are inferior to whites and must be kept in their place. Those who would put the negro race in triumph would work against infallible decree, for the white race can never submit to its domination, because the white race is the superior race.1 That sums up how Grady felt about African-Americans, that they should still be subservient to whites at all times, and he was against them gaining much if any political sway.
