Off-highway vehicle (OHV) call is a rapidly growing break throughdoor activity that results in a host of environmental and management problems. Federal agencies have been nine to develop travel management plans to improve recreation experiences, subvert social conflicts, and diminish environmental impacts of OHVs (Jakus, Keith, Liu, & Blahna, 2010, p. 89). The use of OHVs has been rapidly rising in the United States. Off-highway vehicles are specify as four-wheel drive vehicles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and other specially designed vehicles such as dune buggies and sandrails (Jakus, et. al., 2010, pg. 89).
Sampling is the only order in this study that the authors used to get their results. A promiscuously selected group of OHV owners in the state of Utah was sampled from a add up of registered owners maintained by the state (Burr, Smith, Reiter, Jakus, & Keith, 2008). The owners of these OHVs were mailed out surveys in 2007. A population of about 113,700 OHV owners, from which some 1,500 call and addresses were drawn for participation in the mail survey.
The survey materials (cover letter, survey, and state map) were designed in consultation with representatives of the Utah Governors Public Lands Policy Coordination Office and Utah State Universitys Institute for Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, which had conducted a number of OHV surveys in the past (Jakus, et. al., 2010, pg. 91). The statistics that the authors got from this study were compared with statistics from the National Survey of Recreation and environs (NSRE). Primary survey data were supplemented with data from secondary sources. Our statistical model, based on the cost of travel from ones inhabitation to a destination, required that we identify both the origination of the trip (where the rider left home) and the destination of the trip (exactly where he or she recreated).
