With the northeastward preoccupied with their own problems, the South was able to place antiblack laws and policies with out much opposition. Although Twain wrote the novel after slavery was abolished, he set it several decades earlier, when slavery was still a fact of life. Huck, a poor, uneducated boy, distrusts the morals and principals of the society that treats him as an outcast and fails to protect him from abuse. Hucks lack of education and civilized behavior is looked down upon by his peers, adult figures in town, and even himself.

Where he lacks in general education, however, he makes up for with logical thinking, and intuition.
